The competition is part of the National Calendar of the Ministry of Education and Science, the winner receives an annual scholarship

The National Youth Literature Competition of Center for Jewish-Bulgarian Cooperation “Alef” “Who Saves One Human Life Saves a Whole Universe” is now part of the National Calendar of the Ministry of Education and Science. The winner has a real chance to receive 12 monthly scholarships of 135 BGN. The scholarships are granted by the Ministry of Education to children with outstanding abilities who have won a prize in a national competition, Olympiad or another youth national competition.

The competition, organized by Center “Alef” for the seventh consecutive year, is unique and it has already become a symbol for youth creativity and citizen position. Its mission is to form human virtues and consciousness associated with knowledge of the past. The creative challenge helps young people not to lose their original spiritual guidance for Good and Evil. The inclusion of the competition in the National Calendar of the Ministry of Education and Science is a high recognition for its growing authority and social importance.

More than 1000 young literary talents from different cities of the country have already joined the first 6 editions of the competition. Occurring on the rescue of Bulgarian Jews during the Holocaust, the competition puts a different theme each year to the participants. It is always aimed at unity, tolerance, morality and sacrifice between people in the name of life.

The seventh competition, “Who Saves One Human Life Saves a Whole Universe,” will be officially announced on November 1, 2019 and the works will be accepted until March 1, 2020. The theme of this edition is: “I am one of them – the Bulgarian Righteous among the Nations.”

Young people from all over the country can participate in the competition with their artistic narratives. The competition will be implemented in two categories – “High-school students” – from VIII to XII grade, and “University students” – up to 25 years old.

The works should tell about the life of one of the 20 Bulgarians who were declared as “Righteous among the Nations” (at the choice of the participants), who sacrificed their well-being for saving human life and were honored with the highest gratitude.

The World Holocaust Remembrance Center Yad Vashem in Israel has awarded the title “Righteous among the Nations” to over 29,000 people from 51 countries who helped saving the Jews during the Holocaust. Twenty of them are Bulgarians. Who are they and how have they earned this title is yet to be discovered by young people. Center “Alef” will help them through its virtual library, which gathers information on the topic from various sources.

The winners will be announced at an official ceremony in Burgas in May 2020. Traditionally, the top 20 will be nominated and will attend the ceremony at the expenses of the organizers.

The winner in the “High-school students” category has a chance to receive 12 monthly scholarships of 135 BGN. The participant, which is ranked second in the same category, will represent Bulgaria at the International Congress for Young Leaders in Herzliya, Israel entirely at the expenses of the Center “Alef”. A cash prize of 200 BGN is provided for the third place. The prizes in the “University students” category are monetary – 400 BGN, 300 BGN and 200 BGN respectively for first, second and third place.

All nominated narratives will be collected in a special book edition and some of them will be published in various media.

Co-organizers of “Alef” in the Seventh Youth Literature Competition are the Municipality of Burgas and the National Palace of Children.

As of January 1, 2019, the title of “Righteous among the Nations” has been awarded to 27 362 people from 51 countries.
