Burgas became part of the world Initiative “#We Remember”

With the slogan “#We Remember”, raised by over 150 students, teachers, citizens, public figures and representatives of the institutions, Burgas became part of the #WeRemember World Jewish Congress campaign to combat anti-Semitism and all forms of hatred, genocide and xenophobia. The initiative was organized for the fourth consecutive year by Center for Jewish-Bulgarian Cooperation “Alef” on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the most sinister Nazi camp – Auschwitz.

Why should we remember? The answer to this question was given by the feature documentary “Who Will Write Our Story”, which recreates in a very influential way, with stunning documentary footage, the history of the Jewish community in the Warsaw Ghetto in the years 1940-1944. Center “Alef” has special rights to broadcast the film written by Robert Grossman, Nancy Spielberg, Oscar-winner Adrian Brody and Hollywood star Joan Allen. Its only projection in Burgas took place on February 7, 2020 in the large hall of the Regional Administration.

“Such authentic stories are especially valuable today when we are witnesses of attempts to replace the past, rewrite history, manifestations of neo-Nazism and a cynical desire to disregard anti-Semitism. Every year, the whole world celebrates this anniversary and says “No!” to the human-hate fascist regime. We really need to remember because what happened during World War II is not just a crime against the Jews. This is a crime against humanity, destruction of humanity in all of us.” said the President of Center “Alef” Alberta Alkalay. She urged attendees to take a picture with the “#We Remember” posters and thus join the World Initiative.

The world public honors the International Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27th of January every year. This year in Burgas the initiative was delayed by two weeks because of the flu epidemic. The event was attended by students from the High School of Foreign Languages “Vasil Levski”, School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Acad. Nikola Obreshkov, “Kolyo Ficheto” Professional High School of Construction, Architecture and Geodesy, Romance Languages High School “R. S. Rakovski”, Professional English Language School “Geo Milev” and German Language School “Goethe”.
