The winners in the literature competition by Center “Alef” are going to be awarded

The grand prize is a participation in an international youth leaders’ congress in Israel

The winners of the sixth edition of the National Youth Literary Competition of Center for Jewish-Bulgarian Cooperation “Alef” “Who saves one human life, saves a whole universe” are now clear. The awards are going to be given during the official ceremony on May 9, 2019, Thursday, at 6 pm at the Marine Casino Cultural Center. The theme “To love, despite …” about love and friendship between Bulgarians and Jews, inspired nearly 150 young artists from all over the country. This year, Alef made a new challenge for the young people, directing them towards the creation of a fictional word, a story that blends historical righteousness and imagination. The scope of the competition, which was held in two age categories, was extended. For the first time, besides pupils, students were included in it as well.

The stories were evaluated by a jury composed of: Rumen Leonidov – poet and publisher of the site, Asen Yordanov – journalist and director of the site and Alberta Alkalay – chairperson of CJBC “Alef”.

Twenty of the nominees are invited to attend the official award ceremony, held by Center Alef. The Grand Prize in the category “Students” will be presented by H.E. Rumiana Bachvarova – Ambassador of Bulgaria to Israel, Ex-Minister of the Interior and Deputy Prime Minister. The winner will take part in a one-week congress for young leaders in the experimental school Hakfar Hairoak, Hertzia, Israel. Center Alef sends a winner of the competition to the prestigious world forum, which is a kind of “incubator” for future politicians and leaders for the third consecutive year. It involves young people from Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Bulgaria, South Korea, Taiwan, Finland, Italy, Israel and other countries. The future leaders discuss current topics such as environmental protection, peace and international co-operation.

More prizes as money and material gifts will be awarded with a total prize pool of 3500 BGN – one prize in the category “Students”, two second and two third prizes respectively in the two categories. All prizes are provided by Center Alef and sponsors.

The award ceremony will be preceded by an official ritual for awarding the title “Guardian of Memory”. For a second consecutive year Center “Alef” honours with this distinction prominent personalities and professionals, dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the everlasting examples of humanism, valor and tolerance.

The ritual will take place on May 9th, 2019, at 5 pm, in front of the Thanksgiving Memorial, built in honor of the courageous citizens of Burgas, who have not allowed the deportation of the Jews from the seaside to the death camps, in the city space, called “Tolerance” /right next to hotel “Bulgaria”/. The zone was officially named with this name at the end of February 2019 after a decision of the Municipal Council in Bourgas at the suggestion of the CJBC “Alef” and its initiative committee.

Burgas Municipality is a partner of the initiatives. Official guests at both events are expected to be representatives of local and state government, business, public figures, teachers and students, adherents.

The documentary exhibition “1943: Persecution and Protection. The Fate of the Bulgarian Jews “of the Central State Archives will be presented at the ceremony for the first time in Burgas. It will be exhibited at “Georgi Baev” Hall of the Sea Casino and will be available to citizens and guests of Burgas until 17 May.

The collection of essays “Who saves one human life, saves a whole universe”, which collects the best works from the first five editions of the competition, will be presented as well.

Day after the ceremony the young people, guests of Center Alef, will visit the museum town – Nessebar.
