The best essays from the Alef’s competition were collected in a literary medley

The best essays from the five editions of the national student literary competition of the Center for Jewish-Bulgarian Cooperation “Alef” are collected in a literary medley. The book is titled “Who saves one human life, saves a whole universe,” which is the name of the contest. It has come out of print and it will be officially presented at the award ceremony of the winners of the sixth literary competition on 9th May at the Cultural Center “Sea Casino”. The ceremony will be attended by nominees in this year’s competition, as well as representatives of the state and local authorities, businesses, public figures and citizens.

The c literary medley contains 25 award-winning student works. The essays are on a different topics – each of the editions of the contest is subordinated to an idea related to the anniversary of a historical event or a topical theme of our time. The students present their views and perceptions about the fateful years of the Second World War and the Holocaust, for the heroism and unity in the name of the Fatherland during the First World War, for the supranationality of the art and the indissoluble connection of  the Jewish artists and the Bulgarian culture, they say that they can change the world by following the ideas of the great peacemaker and politician Shimon Peres, returning back in time to experience the fears and hopes of Jews and their rescuers from the death camps in 1943.

The edition contains 203 illustrated pages. It presents the literary contest since its inception in 2013 until now. “We created the contest as an intangible monument of gratitude. The fact that the participants multiply with each subsequent edition gives me the belief that what we are dedicated to makes sense – the good will not be forgotten, in the hearts of the young people the seed of love for the humans germinates, ” says the founder of the competition and president of CJBC “Alef” Alberta Alkalay.

The jury’s evaluation is also included in the literary medley – Mihaylina Pavlova, Rumen Leonidov and Asen Yordanov, who had the difficult task of acquainting themselves with more than 800 student’s works in order to distinguish the best during the past five years. Here the young people find new friends, share their emotions and experience, prepare themselves for further great successes in the literary field. There are pages about the impressions of the winners of the big prize – one week’s participation in a International Environmental Leadership Seminar in Israel. The book also includes feedback on the competition from participants, institutions and citizens who are sympathetic to the idea.

“The theme of the competition is very serious and certainly provokes the imagination of a students with a strong humane attitude towards other people and social engagement. In all of its previous editions, the competition attracts young, loving, big-hearted people who can appreciate the grandeur and heroism behind the holy mission of the SALVATION OF HUMAN LIFE.

I am very happy that these values have such a great worth for today’s children and inspire them to create, “the Mayor of Burgas Dimitar Nikolov writes in his appeal.

The literary medley of student essays proves that the contest “Who saves one human life, saves a whole universe” fulfills its main goal – to educate the young people in humanism and love of mankind, to develop their creative talents, to transform them into decent and tolerant adults.

The literary medley was issued with the financial support of the Municipality of Burgas and the National Council for Cooperation on Ethnic and Integration Issues.
