27th of January – International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Bulgaria marks the International Holocaust Remembrance Day for 13th time. On this day, we pay tribute to the memory of the over 6 million Jews killed during the Second World War. The date is related to the release of the Auschwitz concentration camp on January 27, 1945. For the first time that day is marked in 2000 by 48 countries. In 2005, the United Nations officially adopted and defined 27th of January as the Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Honoring of the memory of the Holocaust victims and survivors is an occasion to recall historical events and to understand the lessons learned from them. It is also a form of opposition to any form of anti-Semitism in the modern world.

The marking of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which this year marks the 75th anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews and the deportation of 11,343 Jews from Vardar Macedonia, Western Thrace and Pirot to the Nazi concentration camps, is part of the Center Alef’s calendar.

This time, Alef joins the Initiative of the World Jewish Congress “WE ARE REMEMBER” again – an attempt to keep alive the memory of the tragic events and prevent such genocide to happen again.
