More than a month before the deadline Center Alef is already receiving works for the competition from across the country.

More than a month before the expiry of the fifth edition of the literary competition “Who saved one human life, saves a whole universe” Center “Alef” is already receiving essays from different parts of Bulgaria. Interest in the competition is shown by pupils from Burgas region as well as from the remote regions of the country.

The competition is becoming more and more popular every year. Its fifth edition will be one of the highlights of the national campaign to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the rescue of Bulgarian Jews from the World War II death camps, and paying tribute to the memory of 11,343 deported Jews from Vardar Macedonia, Aegean Thrace and Pirot.

Center Alef offeres students to return to the section of Bulgarian history 75 years ago and to express their thoughts and feelings. They can move back in time with an imaginary time machine and either enter the role of a savior or those of a rescuer and also to try to look into the future and predict their behavior in a possible identical situation requiring personal choice.

The creative interpretation of the historical events and their echo over the years have given young people a broad view to demonstrate their knowledge and personality. The excellent knowledge of the Bulgarian language and the skills to use it correctly are also a challenge for the participants in the competition.

The jury, chaired by Mihaylina Pavlova – editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Hebrew Vesti” and a journalist at the Bulgarian National Radio and Rumen Leonidov – poet and publisher of the site and Asen Yordanov – journalist and director of the site will get acquainted with the essays and will give their evaluation.

Traditionally, the award of the best ones will be held with a ceremony in Burgas. Since the city has the honor to be one of the regional centers of the national campaign to celebrate 75 years of the act of salvation of the Bulgarian Jews, the event will be accompanied by other interesting initiatives. One of them will be the celebration of placing a memorial sign in honor of the worthy citizens of Burgas, who saved their fellows-Jews.

The best author will be awarded with a week-long International Youth Congress in Israel. Second and third place winners will receive cash prizes of 300 and 200 lv. respectively.

The tradition of the twenty most successful participants in the competition to be present at the ceremony at the expense of the organizers also will be respected.

The calendar continues to count the time until the final deadline – February 10, 2018. The organizers are ready to respond with all the seriousness and responsibility of the efforts and creativity of the students who have taken the worthy challenge of completing the pages of contemporary history.
