Hungarian and Bulgarian poets “dived” in a “Sea of words” in Burgas

Bourgas hosted a unique Bulgarian-Hungarian literary meeting. The Creative Workshop “Sea of Words”, organized by the Center for Jewish-Bulgarian Cooperation “Alef” with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture within the framework of the Communication Strategy of the Republic of Bulgaria for the European Union, was held on October 5th and became part of the Autumn Literary Feasts of Burgas. The event is part of the initiatives to promote contemporary European art. It was joined by the Burgas’ writer community, the Hungarian Cultural Institute, the Municipality of Burgas and the site for investigative journalism “Bivol”.

The event is unique due to the creative experiment, held within – the creation of narrative works in a creative place and their presentation in Bulgarian and Hungarian. A stimulus for poetic inspiration was the Black sea that sparkled under the sun in the silver shades of blue.

The Eskibriz coffee shop in the Sea Garden provided coziness for the exciting meeting between the artists from Bourgas and Budapest and the incorporation of their poetic inspiration. In the “Sea of words” dived Szabina Ughi, Dyongyi Hegedush, gyorgy Szondi, Attila hegyi Botos, Attila Jasz, Imre Babics, Csaba Zsebok, Kera Angelova, Bina Kals, Rosa Maksimova, Milka Ivanova, Ivan Suhivanov, Elka Vassileva, Mina Krasteva , Elena Trendafilova, Kalina Telyanova and the President of the Bourgas writer’s community Rosen Drumev. The poems created in the workshop sounded in Bulgarian and Hungarian through the translations of Gyorgy Szondi and Liana Petrova in the subsequent literary evening.

The “Home of the writer” in Burgas wasn’t enough to accommodate the people who wanted to get acquainted with contemporary Hungarian literature writers and to hear how the poetic Hungarian speech sounded. The Hungarian poets told about themselves, about their work and their leader- Gyorgy  Szondi, an artist permanently connected with Bulgaria, shared the main distinctions of contemporary Hungarian literature.

The poems created in the workshop sounded in both languages - Bulgarian and Hungarian through the translations of Gyorgy Szondi and Liana Petrova. Szabina Ughi, Dyongyi Hegedush, gyorgy Szondi, Attila hegyi Botos, Attila Jasz, Imre Babics, Csaba Zsebok told about themselves and theirher work. At first glance, the unpoetic Hungarian language became surprisingly musical. This was evident from the translated poems from Burgas’ poets- like a kind of compliment for the skills of the translators.

The chairperson of Center Alef- Alberta Alkalay, expressed her satisfaction with the creative event: “In the beginning was the word, and “alef” is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. We have chosen this name because we know the strength of the words and believe in it, “she said.

The creative meeting grew into a friendly dinner and a perspective for future virtual and real meetings.

An exceptional experience for the Hungarian participants in the project “Sea of Words” was their visit to the home of writer and dramaturgist Nedyalko Yordanov. The hospitality of the poet, coupled with the fabulous setting in the courtyard of his house, made a warm conversation about poetry and bridges between the people he creates. The guests received gifts – albums with poetic-song- work of Nedyalko Yordanov and took with them another inspiring friendship, born in Bourgas.

The Hungarian artists will be presented with their works in Bulgarian on the website of Center Alef http://alef-bg.org/ and in the magazine “Sea”, while the Boulagrian poems, translated in Hungarian, will be published in a literary eddition in Hungary.

THIS PROJECT IS IMPLEMENTED WITH THE FINANCIAL SUPPORT OF THE MINISTRY OF CULTURE WITHIN THE COMMUNICATION STRATEGY OF THE REPUBLIC OF BULGARIA FOR THE EUROPEAN UNION
