Winners of the Eighth Literary Youth Competition of Alef Center Awarded

Burgas will bring together young authors from 5 different countries

The official award ceremony for the winners of the Eighth Literary Youth Competition “He who saves one human life, saves an entire universe” will become an exciting celebration of humanism. From this year the competition is international and will gather on June 24 and 25 in Burgas young supporters of peace and tolerance from 5 countries.

The competition is organized by the Center for Jewish-Bulgarian Cooperation “Alef” and for eight years has managed to draw the attention of young people to the topic of the value of human life, charity and heroism of Bulgarians who were not afraid and saved their fellow Jews. from the Nazi military machine and the horrors of the Holocaust during World War II.

“We turned to young people to arouse their interest in the fateful moments of history and their lessons. Because the only guarantee that the atrocities of the Holocaust will not be repeated is that they will not be forgotten. And at the same time to remember and honor those who risked their lives to oppose them “, commented Alberta Alkalay, founder of the competition and chairman of the Aleph Center.

Over 1,200 young literary talents have already participated in the various editions of the competition. More than 50 participants were awarded. The award of the winners in the 4th, 5th and 6th editions of the competition was in the form of a special trip to Israel to participate in the International Congress for Young Leaders. Over 40 Bulgarian students have received scholarships and cash prizes. From 2021 onwards, the winners of the competition from Bulgaria will also receive an annual state scholarship. All nominated stories are collected in a special collection – a book edition. Due to its strong emotional impact, artistic value and educational role, the Ministry of Education and Science announced the collection as a textbook and supplement to history lessons. The works included in the collection were read in history and civilization classes, united in a national campaign entitled “Hour of Dignity”.

Over the years, the literary competition has become a significant forum for youth creativity, received institutional support, entered the educational structures of the country and the National Calendar for talented children. Now the competition is international, which allows the organizers to promote abroad the Bulgarian phenomenon of salvation of Jews during the Holocaust. The initiative received international support in the form of the Embassy of the State of Israel in Bulgaria, the Slovak Ministry of Education, Science and Sports, the Museum of the History of Polish Jews “Polin” in Warsaw, the Polish Cultural Institute in Sofia.

This year, a total of 180 young people took part in the contested race. They wrote fiction on the subject: “I will tell you about my savior.” Alef Center supported the creative imagination of the narrators through the virtual library on its website and through the unusual but already traditional lesson of creativity.

The difficult task of evaluating the works had two commissions – for the best Bulgarian and the best foreign authors. The works of the authors from Bulgaria were competently evaluated by a jury composed of: Radostina Nikolova, senior expert at the Ministry of Education and Science; Georgi Bardarov, writer, specialist in ethno-religious conflicts; Rumen Leonidov – poet and publisher of the site Fakel.bg; Asen Yordanov – journalist, poet and director of the site Bivol.bg; Alberta Alkalay – Chairman of CEBS “Aleph” and founder of the competition.

The stories in the category “Foreign authors” were evaluated by an international jury consisting of: Pavol Rankov – writer, Slovakia; Nikolai Fenerski, writer and translator from Slovak; Vered Elron – Cultural Attaché at the Embassy of Israel in Bulgaria; Dorota Fater, director of the Polish school at the Polish Embassy in Bulgaria.

30 participants reached the final – 20 from Bulgaria and 11 from abroad – Israel, Poland, Slovakia and Germany. Their stories will be collected in the fourth collection published by the Aleph Center, which this year will be bilingual – in Bulgarian and English. All nominees will attend the award ceremony in Burgas at the expense of the organizers. The winners will be announced from them.

The award ceremony, which is among the key events in the cultural calendar of Burgas, will take place on June 24, 2021 at 6 pm at the International Congress Center Burgas. The organizers have also planned a rich two-day accompanying program. On June 25, the young authors will have exciting meetings with prominent artists, will visit landmarks in Burgas, will make contacts with their peers from other cities and countries, will find new friends.

The ceremony of awarding the winners of the competition “Who saved one human life, saves the whole universe” is held under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria and with the special assistance of the Municipality of Burgas. Contributors are the Ministry of Education and Science, the Embassy of the State of Israel, the Embassy of Slovakia, the Polish Institute in Sofia, New Life Clinic, Tria City Center, Bulgarian Direct Raisen, BMF Port Burgas, International Congress Center.
