The International Literary Youth Competition “Whoever Saves One Human Life, Saves a whole Universe” received a warm support of the Hungarian writers. Publications with the regulation of the competition in Hungarian expand the interest shown by young authors not only in the competition, but also in this part of history, targeted by the topic. The Holocaust was also a period of severe trials for Hungarian Jews. They were subjected to repression and torture, shot in the streets and murdered in Nazi death camps.
Hungarian students who decided to take part in Alef’s competition will demonstrate their knowledge of the Holocaust period in their country, but they will also learn about the fate of Bulgarian Jews during World War II. The topic “Unordinary actions of ordinary people” is a challenge for young people from abroad to get acquainted with the greatest moral capital of Bulgaria – saving nearly 50,000 Jewish lives from Hitler’s death machine. In their stories, the participants in the literary competition must find and describe examples of courage, philanthropy, morality in the most inhuman times.
The support provided by the Hungarian Writers’ Organization is another gesture of sympathy for Alef’s initiatives. The beginning of cooperation with Hungarian literary creators was laid through the joint project “Sea of Words” in October 2018 – Bulgarian-Hungarian literary meeting with a creative studio, which Center “Alef” hosted and organized. We expect to have a serious Hungarian presence in the 9th edition of the literary competitionthrough the Hungarian writers – friends of “Alef” and the personal commitment of the face of Bulgarian-Hungarian literature Dr. Dyord Sondi – poet, translator and publisher.
