The literary competition “Whoever saves one human life, saves a whole universe” expands its geographical range. The eighth edition of the competition will accept participants from other countries which makes it international. There will be a separate category for the foreign participants. Alef has already contacted schools in Europe and Israel that have shown interest in the competition and the topic “I will tell you about my savior.” Here you can see the new rules of the competition:

VIII INTERNATIONAL YOUTH LITERARY COMPETITION “WHOEVER SAVES ONE HUMAN LIFE, SAVES A WHOLE UNIVERSE” `2021
ORGANIZER : Center for Jewish-Bulgarian cooperation “Alef”
Facilitators: The competition is organized with the assistance of the Ministry of Education and Science, Municipality of Burgas, National Children’s Palace
TOPIC:
“WHOEVER SAVES ONE HUMAN LIFE, SAVES A WHOLE UNIVERSE”
RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE:
High school students from 14 to 18 years old from Bulgaria, Europe and Israel have the right to participate in the competition in two categories:
– students in secondary schools in Bulgaria
– students in secondary schools in Europe and Israel
GENRE: a narrative based on a historical event or person
REQUIREMENTS:
The participants should present a narrative written specially for this competition.The literary work must not be published and must not be participated in other competitions and it has to be written in the native language of the participant;
Each participant presents only one literary work.
The narrator have to imagine that he/she is living during the Second World War and to create a literary work, looking for the answers to these questions: Who is the savior who helped Jews during the genocide against them? What made him/her risk his/her life to save a Jew during the Holocaust? How does it feel to be in danger and to rely solely on the courage of a friend or to rely on the morals and philanthropy of a stranger?
VOLUME:
Maximum 5 pages in A4 format
The participants must write their full name, short bio, full address for correspondence and e-mail for contact;
TERM:
The competition materials must be sent to the organizer’s e-mail: center.alef@gmail.com
Deadline: 1st of May 2021
EVALUATION:
The literary works will be judged by an international jury. The jury will nominate the 20 best authors from Bulgaria, Europe and Israel.
NOMINATED PARTICIPANTS :
All nominees will be invited to the award ceremony in June 2021 in Burgas, Bulgaria.
The nominated narratives will be published in a separate literary collection, published by Center “Alef”. They will also be published on Alef’s website: www.alef-bg.org
Awarded participants: The jury will announce the winners from all the nominees:
AWARDS:
- Monitary prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place
- The participants from Bulgaria have the right to apply for a year-round scholarships
- Encouragement material rewards
- Certificate for participation and ranking in the competition
- Participation in the award ceremony in June 2021 at the expenses of the organizers and visiting tourist attractions in Burgas
ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE RESULTS:
The results will be announced at the award ceremony which will be held in Burgas in June 2021
